Hogan’s Alley Poetry Festival/Chicken Sessions #10

October 4, 2014 @ 8:00 pm - 11:00 pm

From organizer, Pam Bentley

A few exciting differences for Oct. 4 — Chicken Session #10 is part of the Hogan’s Alley Poetry Festival line-up this year for their theme of Legacy! Thanks to Scruffmouth Scribe aka Kevan Cameron for suggesting this collaboration.

And it’s Chicken Sessions’ first year anniversary!

For this special edition only, there has been some advance inviting of performers. See One- and Two-Spot Lists below. The blank spots left are still up for grabs in the usual ways.

Chicken’s Choices for this special edition are Adelene da Soul Poet and Musicians Late Night Ruckus! Each will do a 20 minute set with at least one debut piece. More info on each of them below.

As always, food and socializing start at 7 p.m. at 2048 Pandora Street, main floor.
Two Buck Potluck was a success so we’ll be doing that again. Details below.

Poetry and song and story begin at 8:00.

The sign-up for the blank slots before them starts NOW here and by email!

To attend, please:
• Bring some FOOD to share.
• If you want to take part in the Two Buck Potluck, here’s how you do it:

Bring a delicious dish and throw a toonie in the (empty) dish in the middle of the table. We’ll indicate that your dish is in the Two Buck Potluck competition. At the end of the night, whoever’s dish gets the most votes for most delicious, gets all the toonies in the dish! (P.S. I don’t think chips will cut it, but if you want to try …)
Last month’s winner of the $15 was Tessa Bourgignon’s Pear and Apricot Crumble (with a ginger zing) with many close competitors.

Also if you are short of funds right now, and can’t bring a dish, please come anyway. There’s always more food than we can eat, and you can contribute another time when you’re a bit more flush with cash. Or bring some apples you picked, or grapes you stole, or whatever … Variety is good! We don’t want anyone staying away hungry — for food, company, words, or music.

• Bring whatever you want to drink. There’ll be a cooler with ice for your beer, wine, pop etc.

• Bring at least $3 for the featured performer or enough cash to buy one CD or chapbook (around $10 to $15).

• Feel free to invite friends.

• Directions: You can’t get here by car directly from Victoria Dr. — use Lakewood. Buses #4, 7, 16 pass close by, and #135 and #20 stop 4 blocks away.
You CAN park in the driveway or there’s lots of room in the street. And we have room for bikes just inside the back gate. Just ask. And please close the gate behind you so Vita doesn’t go on walkabout.

Accessibility: There is one wide but shallow concrete step down into the main backyard but the gate and the side yard are at street level and are wheelchair accessible. There are stairs from there to first floor back door. The bathrooms are not big enough to be fully accessible. There are 16 wide steps up to the front door.

To read/perform a debut piece(s), please:
• DO ALL OF THE ABOVE.
• Look for open space on the sign-up below.
• If you’ve read/performed at 3 or more sessions of the last four, please consider giving someone else a chance first.

• Request a spot on the facebook event page as a comment or in a message to Pam; or if you’re reading this on email, request by reply email; or sign up in person (best if you’re not sure you can make it). The spots go quickly, with no pre-reservations. They fill in the order the messages come in.

• KEEP IN MIND the 4 and 8 MIN. MAXIMUMS. This is especially important in the TWO poem/story/song spots for the sake of pacing.

• Musicians encouraged (as we missed you in August). We now have a beautiful upright piano in our living room that you are welcome to use!

• ONLY DEBUT ORIGINAL WORK. Poems, stories and songs should be never-before performed to an audience in public. The work you present does not need to be finished; it can still be in progress. Acoustic instruments are welcome.

Poet Invited in Advance (aka Chicken’s Choice) 20 mins.:
Adelene da Soul Poet aka Bertha Clark
Adelene is a powerful force on stage enthralling us with her stories and Motown influenced poetry and rhymes. I have also enjoyed talking to her on the phone from the Sunshine Coast where she now lives, getting to know her a bit, and making plans for her visit to Chicken Session #10.
She describes her background below:
“My direct descendants are the first of BC’s black pioneers, who settled on Salt Spring Island and Victoria in the mid-1800s.
My grandma owned a famous restaurant back in the day called Vie’s Chicken and Steaks, a famous restaurant on Vancouver’s Union Street that operated from the early 1940s to the late 1970s.
I come from a family of happy people who loved to party and laugh… and those are my childhood memories that actually carry me through life.” ww.adelenedasoulpoet.com
I expect she’ll feel right at home at a Chicken Session, and with the Legacy theme.

Musician Invited in Advance (aka Chicken’s Choice) 20 mins.: Late Night Ruckus.
“Late Night Ruckus is a four piece rock, soul, spoken word ensemble peppered with smooth spoken word and thick with harmonies. The foursome also combines a bounty of instrumentation including Jess Jungawala on drums,Lexi Marie on guitar and ukelele, Jillian Christmas on guitar and glockenspiel, and Chelsea D.E Johnson on accordion, bass and guitar.
“Late Night Ruckus is … the spry pluck of ukulele linguistics, the accordian wail, the glockenspiel prying at the corners of your smile, while a steady drum commands you to move something, quick! It is the magic of change … it is restless and it is waking.
3/4 of this awesome assemblage are no strangers to Chicken Sessions so this is a sort of all-star team from the last year. We’ll be folding up the chairs and making room to move. I can’t wait!
