Mashed Poetics is a spoken word and musical mash up. It takes place at the 7 Dining Lounge on West Broadway, as well as at poetry festivals across Canada, on a quarterly basis.
For each event we choose a music album and get a cover band to learn all the songs. Poets are then assigned a song from whatever album we are doing to create a new piece of work for the show.
The performance includes the band playing the songs with the poets reading their poems in response to the songs in between the songs.
Albums in the past include Black Sabbath’s “Paranoid”, No Doubt’s “Tragic Kingdom”, Rush’s “Moving Pictures”, The White Stripes’ “Elephant”, Barenaked Ladies’ “Gordon”, Prince’s “Purple Rain”, Beastie Boys’ “Licensed to Ill”, Led Zeppelin’s “Led Zeppelin IV”, and several others.
The series started in 2008, inspired by a similar project in Australia called Liner Notes. Mashed Poetics is staged on a quarterly basis at various venues in Vancouver and at poetry festivals throughout Canada. Check the shows section for details on the next Mashed Poetics event.
